About PHES

Governance

Professional HE Services (PHES) is an umbrella company for membership organisations in Higher Education. Currently PHES is the corporate “parent” of three Special Interest Organisations (SIOs); the British Universities Finance Directors Group (BUFDG), the Higher Education Strategic Planners Association (HESPA) and the Association of University Directors of Estates (AUDE).

PHES is managed by an Executive Board supported by an Executive Director:

  • Gill Ball
  • Melvyn Keen
  • Executive Director - Karel Thomas, Executive Director (BUFDG)
  • Dominic Fryer (Company Secretary)

The Directors delegate responsibility for day-to-day management of the associations to the most senior member of staff working on behalf of that association. In practical terms, the PHES Operations Director (Dominic Fryer) manages the shared back office functions.

Objectives

  • To provide a legal and governance framework for the SIOs.
  • To be the pre-eminent source for information, advice and comment on matters of operation, administration of, and policy affecting specialist professional services.
  • To be the recognised channel for the provision, dissemination and analysis of information and comment to external agencies, the Members and the Associate Members concerning best practice in the operation and administration of, and policy affecting the specialist professional services of such agencies, Members and Associate Members.
  • To promote high standards and best practice operation, administration of, and policy affecting, professional services in higher education in the United Kingdom to provide appropriate opportunities for members of the SIOs to meet the needs of the higher education sector.
  • To work in partnership with related organisations to provide forums for discussion, consultation and exchange, both nationally and regionally.
  • To assist by any other means the Members and Associate Members in carrying on their businesses.

Membership

The membership of PHES is made up of higher education institutions and there are two levels of membership - Full Members and Associate Members. If your institution wishes to become a member of PHES, then please email dominic@phes.ac.uk to request a form.
